Jesus's asking people not to tell

I just started reading back through Matthew and I keep coming across Jesus healing people and then in the same breathe telling that person to not tell anyone. He does this on several occasions. After healing the blind, cast out the demons, lots of examples. But for what reason? I don't understand why. Not that I would expect him to say "Go and tell everyone it was me!". But why the tell no one?

maybe matt put those lines in there to bu ironic, thus making his gospel a little entertaining to read.

also, he may know the effects of what happens when the word get out about a guy who heals and claims for himself "son of God." doesn't want the authorities to find, and kill him before its his time.

i don't know, these are just off the top of my head. all i know, is i love those parts of the story, I think its funny when jesus does something incredible, but is like, "but don't tell anyone." oh yeah, cause that's possible.

ps. man you're going to have to show me the new stuff on blogger, I'm not sure if my has changed ove or if i have to change templates first, but i'm afraid i'll loose everything.

It is very interesting. I just think that there has to be way more to it than just simply to make it interesting. At least that is what I suspect.

Bring your computer next time you come over and we can work on your blog. You can save your old template so that you don't have to lose it for ever. I put mine on a sticky if I ever want to go back to it.

Interesting question--"why".
But isn't is also interesting and somewhat sad that all these who experienced life changing miracles in their life directly from Jesus STILL would not obey a simple command.
(How's that for a comment, and one that continues the conversation?) I also enjoyed lunch last week--next time I buy.

Yeah, but I guess if you have never spoken before and walk into the house and say, "Mom, I'm home". She is going to ask what the heck happened. I mean what's a guy supposed to say. "Uh, I stubbed my toe and when I yelled 'Ouch', it actually came out."

Within Matthew an explanation is given in Matthew 12 through the use of a fascination Old Testament quote.
The messianic prophecy points to a Jesus that is gentle and non-argumentative especially with the weak. Each time the command to silence was disobeyed Jesus left that area in order to avoid confrontation.
In my opinion the "Why" question is answered best by timing. Jesus would reveal His Messianic secret when He was ready and in a different manner than was generally expected through the cross.
Applications to us: gentle evangelsim rather than argumentation, trust in God rather than forcing our expectations?
When the blind guy went home to Mom...whether he told or not...it was a good day in that house!
